Pain in the Butt

INTRODUCTION:
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve of the body. 

Carries contributions from L4-S3

 

GROSS ANATOMY:

  • Forms on the anterior surface of the PIRIFORMIS muscle and leaves the pelvis via the GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN which is BELOW pirifomis. 

  • Passes thru the butt into the leg, where it splits into 2 major branches

    • 1. COMMON FIBULAR NERVE

      • Dorsal Divisions

        • L4

        • L5

        • S1

        • S2

    • 2. TIBIAL NERVE

      • Ventral divisions

        • L4

        • L5

        • S1

        • S2

  • Innervates muscles in the posterior compartment of the thigh and muscles of the leg and foot

  • Carries sensory fibres from the skin of the foot and lateral leg
