The biliary tree

What is it?

A bunch of channels, inside and outside the LIVER which transport bile from the liver to the duodenum.

Gross anatomy:

· Intrahepatic Bile Ducts
o Right Hepatic Duct (RHD)
§ Right Posterior Duct (RPD)
· Segment VI
· Segment VII
§ Right Anterior Duct (RAD)
· Segment V
· Segment VIII
o Left Hepatic Duct (LHD)
§ Segment II
§ Segment III
§ Segment IVa and IVb
o The right and left hepatic ducts combine to form the COMMON HEPATIC DUCT.
§ Segment I (the caudate lobe) drains into the confluence of the RHD and LHD.
· Extrahepatic Bile Ducts
o Cystic duct from the GALL BLADDER joints the Common hepatic duct
o Forms the Common Bile Duct.
o The CBD passes the free edge of the LESSER Omentum and travels behind the duodenum and pancrease.
o Merges with the main pancreatic duct -> AMPULLA of VATER
o The Ampulla of Vater drains in to the medial wall of the second part of the duodenum at the major duodenal papillae.
